Ben and Anna help you to learn a new language
Meet Anna and Ben, the main characters of BILINGY, encounter their friends and follow them through their life, their careers and their little arguments, sometimes quirky, sometimes lazy and sometimes controversial, just like all of us.
When children are learning their mother tongue, they do so effortlessly, intuitively, by immersing themselves into it, by listening to their parents all day and picking up the subtle differences along the way. How can this be translated into language learning later in life? Personally, I do not believe that the answer lies in the prevalent 'gamified' apps out there, they are great to get started and learn a couple of dozen words, but to really master a language you have to go further.
BILINGY always has texts side by side, so you never have to wonder about the meaning of a sentence, it's right there! New words are highlighted so you can identify them quickly. Turn your phone or ipad from portrait to landscape to see both side by side. Hide the translation when you want to test your progress, but if you do not remember something, the translation is right there for you.
BILINGY goes beyond the basics - it is very easy to find a textbook for beginners, even in the most exotic languages, but beyond that it becomes more challenging. BILINGY goes all the way up to C1 in the Common European Framework for Reference for Languages and builds up a vocabulary of more than 1000 words on each level.
Audio - listening comprehension is essential in real life - as we all found out the first time we stood there and tentatively tried a 'Where is the toilet, thanks? No, please, I mean please'. BILINGY has a lot of audio and we have asked native speakers with a clear pronounciation to record these for us.
Grammar - is suspiciously absent from BILINGY. If you study at school or at uni, there is no way to avoid grammar, but in real life what matters is to understand what is going on and get your message across, then you can worry about the future perfect continuous. Don't spend all your time on this, read, listen to podcasts, watch TV, immerse yourself as much as you can.
