D3 The Essay

安娜必须写一篇论文。她在大学的公告栏里浏览了所有剩余的论文主题。挂在公告栏上的清单里仍然包含着一些真正有意思的主题。

Ānnà bìxū xiě yì piān lùnwén. Tā zài dàxué de gōnggàolán lǐ liúlǎnle suǒyǒu shèngyú de lùnwén zhǔtí. Guà zài gōnggàolán shàng de qīngdān lǐ réngrán bāohánzhe yì xiē zhēnzhèng yǒu yìsi de zhǔtí.

Anna has to write an essay for university. She checks the noticeboard on campus to get an overview of the remaining themes. The list that hangs on the noticeboard still contains some genuinely interesting topics.

它把这个清单用短信发给了索菲亚。然后，她拨打了她的电话号码来讨论合作。

Tā bǎ zhège qīngdān yòng duǎnxìn fā gěile Suǒfēiyà. Ránhòu, tā bōdǎle tā de diànhuà hàomǎ lái tǎolùn hézuò.

She texts the list to Sophia. Then she dials her telephone number to discuss their collaboration.

"索菲亚，视频片段研究的注册已经关闭了。”   

Suǒfēiyà, shìpín piànduàn yánjiū de zhùcè yǐjīng guānbìle.”   

“Sophia, somebody else has already registered for the video clip study.”

她听到一声失望的叫喊，但安娜用欢乐的口吻回复索菲亚说：

Tā tīngdào yìshēng shīwàng de jiàohǎn, dàn Ānnà yòng huānlè de kǒuwěn huífù Suǒfēiyà shuō:

She hears a cry of disappointment but Anna replies to Sophia in a cheerful tone:

“太可惜了，其他人先得到了。反正我们应该选一些常规的。咱们毕竟是要成为经济学家的。咱们教授偏好的题目是分析和数学类型的，如果我们做那种非常规的主题，他可能会评分不公正的。

“Tài kěxíle, qítā rén xiān dédào le. Fǎnzhèng wǒmen yīnggāi xuǎn yìxiē chángguī de. Zánmen bìjìng shì yào chéngwéi jīngjìxuéjiā de. Zánmen jiàoshòu piānhào de tímù shì fēnxì hé shùxué lèixíng de, rúguǒ wǒmen zuò nà zhǒng fēichángguī de zhǔtí, tā kěnéng huì píngfēn bù gōngzhèng de.

"Too bad, somebody else got there first. We should take something more conventional anyway. We want to be economists after all. Our professor has a preference for analytical and mathematical topics and he'll mark us unfairly if we do something so unconventional.

"Realistically, he likes economic topics most, we could write about exchange rates, the inflation index, the financial crisis or international trade. He's too conservative.”

“Hmm, your suggestions appear acceptable but they're likely to be very difficult. We have less than two weeks. I think we should choose female unemployment. Incidentally, I have a copy of a thesis I have written a couple of years ago on that issue.

"Its conclusion is very good. We'll have to update some charts and graphs but we can use the same statistical formulas and equations.”

“Tài hǎole, nà yīnggāi huì yǒu hěn dà de qiánlì, wǒ rènwéi jiàoshòu yě huì xǐhuān tā de. Tā tài liǎojiě píngděng de zhòngyàoxìngle. Nǐ hái jìdé tā nà shòuguò liánghǎo jiàoyù de érxí ma? Tā zài shōuyǎngle yí duì shuāngbāotāi hòu, jiù chéngwéile yígè bù fúhé kèbǎn yìnxiàng de mǔqīn.”  

“Perfect, that promises to have a lot of potential, I think the professor will like it too. He understands the importance of equality. Remember his well-educated daughter-in-law who didn't fit the typical mother stereotype after she adopted her twins?"

“她很幸运，她有一个稳定的家庭。有努力工作的丈夫，还有她从对她企业的所有权那里得到的单独一笔收入。”  

“Tā hěn xìngyùn, tā yǒu yígè wěndìng de jiātíng. Yǒu nǔlì gōngzuò de zhàngfū, hái yǒu tā cóng duì tā qǐyè de suǒyǒuquán nàlǐ dédào de dāndú yì bǐ shōurù.”  

“She's lucky, she has the stability of a family with a hard-working husband and a separate income from the ownership of her firm.”

“Others aren't so lucky. The law that's recently been enforced has shortened the protection period for mothers. The situation has deteriorated. The criteria have been tightened, many only receive the equivalent of the minimum wage now.

“We can refer to and summarise the new law.“

“Yes, that's a great idea. As a rule of thumb, parental leave payments will be cut in half, especially for unmarried women. They were receiving a higher percentage of their income before thanks to those payments.”

“我们应该如何划分工作呢？”我们现在就应该界定出来，以免加倍工作量。”  

“Wǒmen yīnggāi rúhé huàfēn gōngzuò ne?” Wǒmen xiànzài jiù yīnggāi jièdìng chūlái, yǐmiǎn jiābèi gōngzuò liàng.”  

“How do we split the work? We should define that clearly now so that we don't double the work.“

“我来通读整个旧论文，先看看重写需要多长时间。除了第三个例子，没有一个例子可以正确地勾勒出当今的情况，因为新的法律已经被通过了。我们必须牢记这一点，并注意不要忽视任何其他法律变化。”

“Let me first read over the old thesis in full to see how much time we'll need to rewrite it. Apart from maybe the third one, none of them outline today's situation correctly because of the new law that's been passed. We have to keep that in mind and make sure we don't overlook any other legal changes.”

“如果你能把你写的在附件里发给我，我会对咱们的工作做最终的整体修正。我知道如何更准确地把每个句号和逗号放在它应在的地方。”

“If you send me your attachments, I’ll do the final corrections of our work as a whole . I'm better at accurately putting every dot and comma where it belongs, as you know.”

“我很想那样做，但是我的宽带连接有问题。我会把它们传真给你，或者在校园里给你。”  

“Wǒ hěn xiǎng nàyàng zuò, dànshì wǒ de kuāndài liánjiē yǒu wèntí. Wǒ huì bǎ tāmen chuánzhēn gěi nǐ, huòzhě zài xiàoyuán lǐ gěi nǐ.”  

“I'd like to but I'm having problems with my broadband connection. I can fax them to you or give them to you on campus.”

“你可以用你的智能手机把文件附在电子邮件里给我发过来吗？”  

“Nǐ kěyǐ yòng nǐ de zhìnéng shǒujī bǎ wénjiàn fù zài diànzǐ yóujiàn lǐ gěi wǒ fā guòlái ma?”  

"Can you email me from your smartphone with the documents attached?”

“我不能访问虚拟数据库，无论是从我的手机还是笔记本电脑。尽管看得见光标，在触控板上点击却不起作用。”  

“Wǒ bùnéng fǎngwèn xūnǐ shùjùkù, wúlùn shì cóng wǒ de shǒujī háishì bǐjìběn diànnǎo. Jǐnguǎn kàn de jiàn guāngbiāo, zài chùkòngbǎn shàng diǎnjī què bù qǐ zuòyòng.”  

“I can't access the virtual database, either from my smartphone or my laptop. The cursor's visible but the click from the touchpad doesn't work.”

“That hard drive isn't freely accessible. You can only export files from the disk when you're at uni. When I wanted to export one of my excel spreadsheets I had the same problem."

“我该怎么贿赂你去帮我做呢？” 索菲娅恳求地说。

“Wǒ gāi zěnme huìlù nǐ qù bāng wǒ zuò ne?” Suǒfēiyà kěnqiú de shuō.  

“How can I bribe you to do this?” Sophia begs her.

“你的懒惰可真惊人！当然，你应该知道我们从今天就得开始做吧。”  

“Nǐ de lǎnduò kě zhēn jīngrén! Dāngrán, nǐ yīnggāi zhīdào wǒmen cóng jīntiān jiù děi kāishǐ zuò ba.”  

“Your laziness is quite astonishing! You knew that we needed to begin with this today.”

“我这里有点忙乱。我只有在周一可以继续，而你现在就可以做这件事。不用说，作为回报，我也会为你做些事的。

“Wǒ zhè li yǒudiǎn mángluàn. Wǒ zhǐyǒu zài zhōuyī kěyǐ jìxù, ér nǐ xiànzài jiù kěyǐ zuò zhè jiàn shì. Búyòng shuō, zuòwéi huíbào, wǒ yě huì wèi nǐ zuò xiē shì de.

“It’s a bit hectic here. I'll only be able to get to uni on Monday whereas you're there working on it now. It goes without saying that I'll do something for you in return.

"By no means do I want there to be controversy between us over this assignment. I can do the presentation and also help you with your negotiation for the scholarship next week.”

“那太好了！为了实现我的梦想，我真的很需要这笔奖学金。”  

“Nà tài hǎole! Wèile shíxiàn wǒ de mèngxiǎng, wǒ zhēn de hěn xūyào zhè bǐ jiǎngxuéjīn.”  

“That would be great! I want to be able to realise my dream and for that I really need this scholarship. “
