D7 In Court

劳拉正在报道对市长的审判。她非常热心。正义和公平一直对她来说很重要。所以她对审判很痴迷。

Laura is reporting on the trial against the mayor. She is very enthusiastic. Justice and fairness have always been important to her. She is fascinated by trials.

Occasionally, she even attends civil trials when she is off duty. She likes to listen to the investigators who describe each individual case and arrive at a motive for the crime little by little.

Last week, a shopkeeper told a terrifying tale. A shooting happened right outside his shop and one of his acquaintances was severely injured.

The shooter and his companion were arrested a week later. Naturally, it caused disruption and many of his clients have started to shop elsewhere.

The shopkeeper now has a better lock on his door and, in the meantime, has also installed a new security monitor. He went into a lot of detail during the trial. His story dominated Laura’s thoughts throughout the next week.

Since she is reporting on it exclusively Laura will have to follow today’s case from start to finish. The readers' interest in it is well above average. She notes down her observations in her neat handwriting.

The mayor is accused of cruelly murdering his wife's secret lover, but he claims that he is innocent.

The media is hoping for a confession from him. His solicitor insisted on excluding them from the trial and they are frustrated.

Zhǔnbèi gōngzuò yǐjīng wánchéngle. Péishěntuán de chéngyuánmen zhèngzài rùzuòle dàn bèigào de lǜshī réngrán quēxí.

The preparations are finished. The jury members are taking their seats, but the defence attorney is still absent.

“请就坐，审判开始了。”  

“Qǐng jiùzuò, shěnpàn kāishǐle.”  

“Please be seated, the trial is beginning.” 

因为律师的迟到，让他久等，所以法官很恼火。

Yīnwèi lǜshī de chídào, ràng tā jiǔ děng, suǒyǐ fǎguān hěn nǎohuǒ.

The attorney was late and kept him waiting therefore the judge is irritated.

“起码，你应该遵守我们的议程。我希望你将来会这样做。”  

“Qǐmǎ, nǐ yīnggāi zūnshǒu wǒmen de yìchéng. Wǒ xīwàng nǐ jiānglái huì zhèyàng zuò.”  

“At the very least you could comply with our timetable. I expect you to do so going forward.”

律师似乎很苦恼。他代表的客户中一个富有的客户现在离婚了，他不得不亲自去看他。

Lǜshī sìhū hěn kǔnǎo. Tā dàibiǎo de kèhù zhōng yígè fùyǒu de kèhù xiànzài líhūnle, tā bùdé bù qīnzì qù kàn tā.

The attorney looks distressed. One of the affluent clients he represents is getting divorced and he had to see him in person.

“我已经尽量准时到达了，但是堵车了。”   

“Wǒ yǐjīng jìnliàng zhǔnshí dàodále, dànshì dǔchēle.”   

“I did my utmost to be on time but there were traffic jams.”

一个寡妇坐在第一排。她盯着的犯罪嫌疑人充满了绝望，并嘀咕着：“我希望他们会把你关起来关很长时间。”  

Yígè guǎfù zuò zài dì yī pái. Tā dīngzhe de fànzuìxiányí rén chōngmǎnle juéwàng, bìng díguzhe:“Wǒ xīwàng tāmen huì bǎ nǐ guān qǐlái guān hěn cháng shíjiān.”  

The widow sits in the first row. Full of despair, she stares at the suspect and mutters: “I hope they lock you away for a long time.”

一个目击者证实了受害者与市长夫人有婚外情这件事。

Yígè mùjízhě zhèngshíle shòuhàizhě yǔ shìzhǎng fūrén yǒu hūnwàiqíng zhè jiàn shì.

A witness confirms that the victim had an affair with the mayor's wife.

“Zhè tài bú xiànghuàle! Tā shì yígè kějìng de nǚrén. Tā yǒngyuǎn bú huì qīpiàn wǒ, yě yǒngyuǎn bú huì yǔ lìng yígè nánrén fàshēng xìng guānxì.  Shìzhǎng hàodòu de shuō.

“This is outrageous! She's a respectable woman. She would never deceive me and have a sexual relationship with another man,” the mayor says aggressively.

劳拉对他如此坚决地否认此事感到惊讶。这在小镇上已经不是秘密了。从很久以前，每个人就开始八卦这件事了。

Laura is surprised that he denies the affair so firmly. It did not remain a secret in the town. Everybody started gossiping about it long ago.

The witness avoids looking at the mayor and continues to supply information about the night in question.

“Nà jiùshì qiángjiān” shìzhǎng dǎduànle tā de huà. Tā de liǎn hěn míngxiǎn de biàn cāngbái le.  

“Then it was rape,” the mayor interrupts. He is noticeably pale.

“Zhège yàngzi wǒmen shénme jiéguǒ yě dé bú dào. Fǎguān shēngqìle.  

“We won't get anywhere like this.” The judge is angry.

“你认为他们会给他判刑吗？”

“Nǐ rènwéi tāmen huì gěi tā pànxíng ma?”

“Do you think they'll sentence him?”

“这大部分取决于他妻子的证词。如果她哭泣并且变得歇斯底里，那会削弱他的机会。但是他的释放还是有可能的，因为他们没有确凿证据。”  

“Zhè dà bùfèn qǔjué yú tā qīzi de zhèngcí. Rúguǒ tā kūqì bìngqiě biàn de xiēsīdǐlǐ, nà huì xuēruò tā de jīhuì. Dànshì tā de shìfàng hai shì yǒu kěnéng de, yīnwèi tāmen méiyǒu quèzuò zhèngjù.”  

“That'll largely depend upon his wife’s testimony. If she sobs and becomes hysterical it would weaken his chances. But his release is likely because they have no concrete evidence against him.”

“He's not cooperating, but he's not dumb. On the contrary, if he broke the law and is the killer here, I doubt that he'd be so aggressive right now. “
