D8 The bank

安娜在故乡的郊区短暂地散了个步。从她还是个孩子的时候，这里的周围环境就没有变过。她正在去银行的路上。她被转身回去这个想法诱惑着，但她不想当个懦夫。

Ānnà zài gùxiāng de jiāoqū duǎnzàn de sànle gè bù. Cóng tā háishì gè háizi de shíhòu, zhèlǐ de zhōuwéi huánjìng jiù méiyǒu biànguò. Tā zhèngzài qù yínháng de lùshàng. Tā bèi zhuǎnshēn huíqù zhège xiǎngfǎ yòuhuòzhe, dàn tā bùxiǎng dāng gè nuòfū.

Anna is out for a short walk in the suburb of her hometown. The surroundings have not changed a lot since she was a child. She is on her way to the bank. She is tempted to simply turn around, but she does not want to be a coward.

银行经理同意和她谈话了她很感激他的这一举动。 他总是消息灵通，宽容，而且是一个很好的倾听者。她对他的管理经验很感兴趣。她想知道她是否可以忍受这种生活方式，以及是否有从他那里获得推荐信的可能性。

Yínháng jīnglǐ tóngyì hé tā tánhuà. Tā hěn gǎnjī tā de zhè yì jǔdòng. Tā zǒngshì xiāoxi língtōng, kuānróng, érqiě shì yígè hěn hǎo de qīngtīng zhě. Tā duì tā de guǎnlǐ jīngyàn hěn gǎn xìngqù. Tā xiǎng zhīdào tā shìfǒu kěyǐ rěnshòu zhè zhǒng shēnghuó fāngshì, yǐjí shìfǒu yǒu cóng tā nàlǐ huòdé tuījiàn xìn de kěnéng xìng.

The bank director has agreed to a talk with her. She appreciates his gesture. He is always well-informed, tolerant and a good listener. She is interested in his experience in management. She wants to know whether she could tolerate this way of life and what her possibilities are to get a reference from him.

她进入了银行。这里没有其他的客户。她走到坐在桌子那里的接待员处，桌子上有一大花瓶的玫瑰，接待员有点怀疑地看着她。安娜对她温暖地笑了笑。

Tā jìnrùle yínháng. Zhèlǐ méiyǒu qítā de kèhù. Tā zǒu dào zuò zài zhuōzi nàlǐ de jiēdàiyuán chù, zhuōzi shàng yǒu yí dà huāpíng de méiguì, jiēdàiyuán yǒudiǎn huáiyí de kànzhe tā. Ānnà duì tā wēnnuǎn de xiàole xiào.

She enters the bank. There are no other clients. She walks up to a receptionist who is sitting at a desk with a large vase of roses and looking at her suspiciously. Anna smiles warmly at her.

“有什么要帮忙的吗？” 接待员粗鲁地说。  

“Yǒu shénme yào bāngmáng de ma?” Jiēdàiyuán cūlǔ de shuō.  

“How can I assist you?” the receptionist says rudely.

“我是安娜·阿尔巴特。我是来见经理的。”  

“Wǒ shì Ānnà Āěrbātè. Wǒ shì lái jiàn jīnglǐ de.”  

“My name is Anna Arbat and I'm here to see the director.”

安娜回答后，接待员意识到，安娜的父亲是他们的一个股东，并礼貌地请求安娜耐心等待。

Ānnà huídá hòu, jiēdàiyuán yìshídào, Ānnà de fùqīn shì tāmen de yígè gǔdōng, bìng lǐmào de qǐngqiú Ānnà nàixīn děngdài.

After hearing Anna’s reply, the receptionist realises that Anna’s father is one of their shareholders and, politely this time, she asks Anna for a bit of patience.

安娜清楚这种行为突然改变的原因。她的父亲是董事会成员，而且持有着量相当大的股票。他和这个经理之间的关系相当不错。但他的待人接物有着不太友善的名声。

Ānnà qīngchǔ zhè zhǒng xíngwéi túrán gǎibiàn de yuányīn. Tā de fùqīn shì dǒngshìhuì chéngyuán, érqiě chí yǒuzhe liàng xiāngdāng dà de gǔpiào. Tā hé zhège jīnglǐ zhī jiān de guānxì xiāngdāng búcuò. Dàn tā de dàirénjiēwù yǒuzhe bú tài yǒushàn de míngshēng.

Anna is aware of the reason for this sudden change in behaviour. Her father is a member of the board and holds a substantial amount of stocks. The relations between him and the director are reasonably good, but he has a reputation for unfriendly behaviour.

安娜希望自己能少害羞些，并且像父亲一样对这种状况都很有自信。没过多长时间，银行家就准备好可以见她了。安娜对他有着无限的敬佩。

Ānnà xīwàng zìjǐ néng shǎo hàixiū xiē, bìngqiě xiàng fùqīn yíyàng duì zhè zhǒng zhuàngkuàng dōu hěn yǒu zìxìn. Méiguò duō cháng shíjiān, yínháng jiā jiù zhǔnbèi hǎo kěyǐ jiàn tāle. Ānnà duì tā yǒuzhe wúxiàn de jìngpèi.

Anna would like to be less shy and have her father’s self-confidence in these types of circumstances. Before long, the banker is ready to see her. Anna has always had an immense amount of admiration for him.

经理是一个中等身材的人。他说话的口音通常很柔和。

Jīnglǐ shì yígè zhōngděng shēncái de rén. Tā shuōhuà de kǒuyīn tōngcháng hěn róuhé.

He is a man of medium height. He speaks with his usual smooth accent.

“你好安娜！能见到你真好！”他乐呵呵地说。“很抱歉，我没有与你保持联系。我没有信守承诺。” 

“Nǐ hǎo Ānnà! Néng jiàndào nǐ zhēn hǎo!” Tā lè hēhē de shuō.“Hěn bàoqiàn, wǒ méiyǒu yǔ nǐ bǎochí liánxì. Wǒ méiyǒu xìnshǒu chéngnuò.”    

“Hi Anna! Good to see you!” he says cheerfully. “I'm sorry that I haven't kept in touch with you. I broke my promise.”

“我也是，请谅解我没有早点与你联系。我早就应该过来，但我现在住得不那么近了。”

“Wǒ yěshì, qǐng liàngjiě wǒ méiyǒu zǎodiǎn yǔ nǐ liánxì. Wǒ zǎo jiù yīnggāi guòlái, dàn wǒ xiànzài zhù de bú nàme jìnle.”   

“Me too, forgive me for not reaching out earlier. I should have popped in sooner but I don't quite live around the corner anymore.”

经理向后靠在椅子上。

Jīnglǐ xiàng hòu kào zài yǐzi shàng.

The director leans back in his chair

“我大学的第一年，是在七十年代，我住在学生宿舍。我终于从我后妈那里被放了出来  ，我可以向你保证，我充分利用了那段时间。我被各种进步和革命的主意所吸引。那时候可真惊险啊！”  

“Wǒ dàxué de dì yī nián, shì zài qīshí niándài, wǒ zhùzài xuéshēng sùshè. Wǒ zhōngyú cóng wǒ hòumā nàlǐ bèi fàngle chūlái, wǒ kěyǐ xiàng nǐ bǎozhèng, wǒ chōngfèn lìyòngle nà duàn shíjiān. Wǒ bèi gè zhǒng jìnbù hé gémìng de zhǔyì suǒ xīyǐn. Nà shíhòu kě zhēn jīngxiǎn a!”  

“In my first year at uni, back in the seventies, I lived in the student halls. I was finally set free from my stepmother and I can guarantee you that I made the most of it. I was drawn into all kinds of progressive and revolutionary ideas there. It was thrilling!”

安娜听着，并且不禁屏住了呼吸。

Ānnà tīngzhe, bìngqiě bùjīn bǐng zhùle hūxī.

Anna listens and holds her breath.

“真的，我无法想象你会与那样的团体有关联。”  

“Zhēn de, wǒ wúfǎ xiǎngxiàng nǐ huì yǔ nàyàng de tuántǐ yǒu guānlián.”  

“I really can't imagine you being associated with such groups.”

“那时我要优先考虑的事与现在不同。你把今天的自由当成是理所当然的但那个时候我们还在努力争取。

“Nà shí wǒ yào yōuxiān kǎolǜ de shì yǔ xiànzài bùtóng. Nǐ bǎ jīntiān de zìyóu dàngchéng shì lǐsuǒdāngrán de dàn nàgè shíhòu wǒmen hái zài nǔlì zhēngqǔ.

“My priorities back then differed from today’s. You take certain liberties for granted today but we were still fighting for them back then.

要记住，那时许多权利都被限制在男性手中。亦即对职业的选择也是这样。女性当年甚至会被劝阻上大学。因为他们的家人认为这对于她们来说没有用。”   

Yào jì zhù, nà shí xǔduō quánlì dōu bèi xiànzhì zài nánxìng shǒuzhōng. Yì jì duì zhíyè de xuǎnzé yěshì zhèyàng. Nǚxìng dāngnián shènzhì huì bèi quànzǔ shàng dàxué. Yīnwèi tāmen de jiārén rènwéi zhè duìyú tāmen láishuō méiyǒu yòng.”   

Bear in mind that many rights were limited to men, namely choosing a profession. Women were even discouraged from attending uni since their families thought it would be of no use to them.”

”幸运的是，这种观点在今天已经灭绝了。”  

” Xìngyùn de shì, zhè zhǒng guāndiǎn zài jīntiān yǐjīng mièjuéle.”  

“Luckily that viewpoint is dying out today.”

经理看起来很体贴。

The director looks thoughtful.

“我希望这会是长期的，但看起来好像在短期内不平等的事情还会增加。现在仍然存在着许多歧视，这是我所坚信的。  

“Wǒ xīwàng zhè huì shì chángqī de, dàn kàn qǐlái hǎoxiàng zài duǎnqī nèi bù píngděng de shìqíng hái huì zēngjiā. Xiànzài réngrán cúnzàizhe xǔduō qíshì, zhè shì wǒ suǒ jiānxìn de.  

“In the long term I hope it will, but it looks as if, in the short term, inequality is still on the rise. My belief is that there's still a lot of discrimination today.

如果我是你，我会提防骚扰并避开麻烦。如果有人试图欺负你，你必须立即捍卫自己，那么他会看起来像个傻瓜，而你会获得胜利。” 

Rúguǒ wǒ shì nǐ, wǒ huì dīfáng sāorǎo bìng bì kāi máfan. Rúguǒ yǒu rén shìtú qīfù nǐ, nǐ bìxū lìjí hànwèi zìjǐ, nàme tā huì kàn qǐlái xiàng gè shǎguā, ér nǐ huì huòdé shènglì.” 

"If I were you, I'd watch out for harassment and avoid trouble. If someone tries to bully you, defend yourself immediately, then he'll look like a fool and you get the triumph.”

“谢谢你对我如此关怀备至，我希望当我经受挑衅的时候，我也会那样有智慧和勇气去面对。”  

“Xièxiè nǐ duì wǒ rúcǐ guānhuái bèizhì, wǒ xīwàng dāng wǒ jīngshòu tiǎoxìn de shíhòu, wǒ yě huì nàyàng yǒu zhìhuì hé yǒngqì qù miàn duì.”  

“Thank you for being so protective, if I'm exposed to aggressions I hope I'll have the wisdom and courage to react like that.”
