E5 Retirement

索菲亚的公公已经买下了海外一块很偏远的地，并计划在那里建造一所房子。他必须首先拆除一间旧的小屋棚。这次购买需要数量非常可观的文书工作。

Sophia’s father-in-law has purchased an isolated plot of land overseas and is planning on building a house there. First, he needs to demolish an old cabin. The amount of paperwork required for the purchase is significant.

When he asked him out of nowhere to go overseas to conclude the transaction for him in person, he put Marc in a difficult position. Marc swore aloud because he suddenly had to rethink his own holiday planning.

After Marc bought a new scent in the duty free shop, Sophia and Marc are boarding the plane.

马克坚持要一起去。因为这是一个超级好的机会，可以一起来一个很短的周末旅行。索菲亚也受够了又冷又潮的天气和雾气。所以也不需要太多的鼓励就和他一起走了。

Marc insisted on going. This was a superb chance to go on a quick weekend trip together. Sophia was also fed up with the mist and the cold, damp weather. She didn't need much encouragement to leave.

After landing, Marc drives their van down a tranquil mountain road. He drives around the last bend and brakes. They have their first glimpse of the exceptional view.

Sophia is astonished. She had underestimated how picturesque and unspoiled the area would be.

“Zhège dìfāng zhēn yǒu bù shǎo mèilì, yóuqí shì zhèlǐ de zhè piàn cǎodì. Wǒ xiǎng wǒ gānggāng kàndàole húli hé lù. Érqiě nà biān de chítáng lǐ hái yǒu qīngwā.” 

“This spot really has a lot of charm, especially this meadow here. I think I've just seen a fox and some deer! And there are frogs in the pond over there."

“看看隔壁的豪宅。它看起来好似一座宫殿！我敢肯定他们是有园丁的。他们庄园边界上的树篱是如此完美。”  

“Kànkàn gébì de háozhái. Tā kànqǐlái hǎosì yì zuò gōngdiàn! Wǒ gǎn kěndìng tāmen shì yǒu yuándīng de. Tāmen zhuāngyuán biānjiè shàng de shùlí shì rúcǐ wánměi.”  

"Look at the neighbouring mansion. It resembles a palace! I'm sure they have a gardener. That hedge on the boundary of their estate is so perfect.”

“Dàn yuàn bàba bìng bù xiǎng hé tāmen jìngzhēng.”  

“Let’s hope dad doesn't want to compete with them.”

“We can warn your parents. If their property looks too posh they risk burglaries.”

“我希望能成。我只想在这里放松一下，拿着一品脱啤酒坐在树荫下，来享受这份宁静。”  

“Wǒ xīwàng néngchéng. Wǒ zhǐ xiǎng zài zhèlǐ fàngsōng yíxià, názhe yì pǐntuō píjiǔ zuò zài shù yīn xià, lái xiǎngshòu zhè fèn níngjìng.”  

“I hope that works. I just want to chill out here, sit in the shade with a pint of beer and enjoy the peace.”

“是的，这是一个很棒的地点，可以放空自己，休息一下而且在阳光下稍待一会儿。”  

“Shì de, zhè shì yígè hěn bàng dì dìdiǎn, kěyǐ fàngkōng zìjǐ, xiūxi yíxià érqiě zài yángguāng xià shāo dāi yìhuǐr.”  

“Yes, it is a great location to just switch off, to rest a bit and for a short stay in the sun.”

“They invest without even having citizenship, that does require bravery. There's the uncertainty that their pension might not be transferred here. And I also think the system isn't comparable for those who have a disability.”

“Well, when they sold their firm, they did make quite a bit of money. I think they would survive without the state pension and maintain their current standard of living.”

“是的，他们在经济上是独立的，无论发生什么，他们的积蓄都很充足。”   

“Shì de, tāmen zài jīngjì shàng shì dúlì de, wúlùn fāshēng shénme, tāmen de jīxù dōu hěn chōngzú.”   

“Yeah, they are financially independent and in any case their savings will be sufficient.”

“Generally speaking, I like the idea of them living here and enjoying their privacy. When Dad set up his commerce as an electrician, he worked a lot of overtime. And to make matters worse he never justified his absences.”

“That must have been a very difficult phase for you. You were never short of money, but you must have felt envy for the life of other kids.”

“是的！孤独是最糟糕的。我想不起来他在我要参加考试之前曾祝过我一次好运，或是在我跑步比赛得到奖牌时祝贺过我。”  

“Shì de! Gūdú shì zuì zāogāo de. Wǒ xiǎng bù qǐlái tā zài wǒ yào cānjiā kǎoshì zhīqián céng zhùguò wǒ yícì hǎo yùn, huòshì zài wǒ pǎobù bǐsài dédào jiǎngpái shí zhùhèguò wǒ.”  

“Yes! The loneliness was the worst of all. I can't recall him ever wishing me luck before I sat an exam, or congratulating me when I got medals in running events.”

“你还在为此生气吗？这确实对你小时候的健康快乐有负面影响，不是吗？”  

“Nǐ hái zài wèi cǐ shēngqì ma? Zhè quèshí duì nǐ xiǎo shíhòu de jiànkāng kuàilè yǒu fùmiàn yǐngxiǎng, búshì ma?”  

“Are you still mad about that? It really negatively impacted your well-being as a child, didn't it?”

“他为自己的事业而活，而家庭并不重要。他从来不做任何妥协。这是我妈妈决定和他分开时的一个重要因素。”  

“Tā wèi zìjǐ de shìyè ér huó, ér jiātíng bìng bú zhòngyào. Tā cónglái bú zuò rènhé tuǒxié. Zhè shì wǒ māmā juédìng hé tā fēnkāi shí de yígè zhòngyào yīnsù.”  

“He lived for his company and his family was unimportant. He never made any compromises. That was a major factor when my mum decided to separate from him.”

“Did she often complain about the situation to you? And was she bad-tempered or anxious? I know she was comparatively well-off, but she must also have desired to share her problems with someone.”

“She was too wise to draw me into it. She wanted me to grow up peacefully. I was conscious of the problems between them to some extent, but she never spoke to me about it openly.

She spent most of her time gardening, but it was evident that she was unhappy. My dad was too stubborn to compromise and it was getting worse and worse. He was in no hurry to get a divorce and he was faithful to her, but the end was sort of predictable.”
