E8 The novelist

Ben has lost his voice and can only whisper today. An important meeting with a bestselling author has been assigned to him and nobody can take his place. He takes some aspirin. As the painkiller takes effect, he feels better and is able to go to his meeting.

The author does a lot to please his readership and has just come back from a workshop he hosted for his fans. Ben questions him about his upcoming bestseller. It has received very good ratings. The main theme of the book is immigration and how the population reacts to it emotionally.

“This surge in migration due to hunger, ethnic tensions, and human rights abuses has huge consequences. The migrants are in distress and feel compelled to escape the cruelty they face at home. If they remained at home, the fate of loads of illegal immigrants would be unclear.”

“Yǒu pīpíngzhě shuō, zhèlǐ de bàolì fànzuì shùliàng yǒu suǒ zēngjiā, érqiě qíngkuàng gèngjiā èhuàle. Shì yímín jiù bǐ qítā rén gèng xíngwéi bù duān, háishì zhèxiē zhǐkòng dōu shì jiǎ de ne? Hái huì yǒu gèng duō de yímín bèi jūbǔ ma?”   

“Critics say that the number of violent crimes has increased here and the situation has worsened. Can it be said that migrants misbehave more than others or are these allegations untrue? Are there more arrests?”

“After they escape from their home country, immigrants have to live with memories of endless fighting against the military. That makes settling and leading a quiet life here difficult.”

"Some are skilled workers, such as plumbers, and those who are unqualified take seasonal jobs that native workers refuse to do.”

“Dànshì xǔduō yímín dōu jìnle jiānyù - zhè zhǔyào shi yīnwèi dúpǐn shàngyǐn ma?”

“But a lot of immigrants end up in prison – is that mainly due to problems with drug addiction?”

“Yes, that is true: up to 10 percent of them cannot be integrated. We have to acknowledge the problem here, but imprisoning them is not the solution. The refugee life has turned many into addicts and we have to encourage them to fight against the addiction.”

“Rénmen yǒu hěnduō de piānjiàn, bǐrú yǒu rén shuō zhè shì zài lànyòng fúlì zhìdù. Nǐ duì cǐ shì zěnme xiǎng de ne?”  

“There are many prejudices, such as the idea that they're abusing the welfare system. What do you think about that?”

即便有那么多自愿的帮手基本上每天都在展现着仁慈和慷慨。现在也没有足够的方案来满足他们的需求。一方面，这里可以很快等到庇护和食物，但是另一方面，在很多地方，我们曲解了他们悲惨的过去。   

 Jíbiàn yǒu nàme duō zìyuàn de bāngshǒu jīběn shàng měitiān dōu zài zhǎnxiàn zhe réncí hé kāngkǎi. Xiànzài yě méiyǒu zúgòu de fāng'àn lái mǎnzú tāmen de xūqiú. Yì fāngmiàn, zhèlǐ kěyǐ hěn kuài děng dào bìhù hé shíwù, dànshì lìng yì fāngmiàn, zài hěnduō dìfāng, wǒmen qūjiěle tāmen bēicǎn de guòqù.   

Even though there are many voluntary helpers who show a lot of kindness and generosity on a daily basis, there are just not enough programs that cater to their needs. On the one hand the wait for shelter and food is short here, but on the other hand in many respects we misunderstand their tragic past.”

“The willingness to provide goods for their day to day life is no substitute for psychological support. They also lack the understanding of how our state functions, but if the integration is to progress well, this is important.”

“The approval process is really too long. Refugees have to wait on average three months, but there is no sign that this will change. The government is trialling a new system. It distributes recycled clothing directly, but they have to determine how to roll it out for food too.”

“你认为这会使分配制度的监管复杂化吗？当前的系统真的会为滥用难民权利提供便利吗？”  

“Nǐ rènwéi zhè huì shǐ fēnpèi zhìdù de jiānguǎn fùzá huà ma? Dāngqián de xìtǒng zhēn de huì wèi lànyòng quánlì tígōng biànlì ma?”  

“Do you think this complicates the supervision of the system? Does the current system really facilitate abuse?”

“用凭票来作为付款的代替品正是在试图阻止这种滥用福利的情况。让我澄清一下：难民已经为履行对家乡家人极为重要的承诺，而承受了诸多不便。他们经常挨饿。他们并不试图致富，而是会把包裹寄回家给他们仍然处于困境的家人们。”

Ràng wǒ chéngqīng yíxià: Nànmín yǐjīng wèi lǚxíng duì jiāxiāng jiārén jíwéi zhòngyào de chéngnuò, ér chéngshòule zhūduō búbiàn. Tāmen jīngcháng ái è. Tāmen bìng búshìtú zhìfù, ér shì huì bǎ bāoguǒ jì huí jiā jǐ tāmen réngrán chǔyú kùnjìng de jiārénmen.”   

“The substitution of payouts with vouchers tries to stem the abuse. Let me clarify this: refugees accept their own inconvenience to fulfil an immensely important promise they made to their families back home. They're often starving. They don't try to enrich themselves, instead they send parcels home to their disadvantaged families.”
